More than 100 students from IADT and other colleges in Europe will be able to take part in workshops spanning motion graphics, augmented reality and generative type. The workshops will take place at IADT’s campus in Kill Avenue.

Workshop 1
Generative Type (using p5.js) Hartmut Bohnacker |
---|
p5.js ( https://p5js.org/ ) is a Javascript library that takes the spirit from Processing and translates it to Javascript. Its goal is to make coding accessible for designers by making it as easy as possible to draw graphical output to the screen. In this workshop we will use this programming environment to create and interactively manipulate letters on the screen. The students may work in teams of two or three people. Each team will design and program a set of letters from the alphabet. Each letter may involve generative techniques like loops or randomness.

Workshop 2
Kinectype: designing letterforms with your body Ted Davis |
---|
Participants will use a custom software tool, KINECTYPE, enabling one to design letterforms with their body.
Through this performative act, one can attach meaning to type through poses and gestures.
While a functional font can be created, we'll use the mediated views of our body and type this tool provides,
composing short time-based narratives to communicate a chosen action.

Workshop 3
VR & MR Typography (Unity) Brian Lucid & Marcin Wichrowski |
||
---|---|---|
coming soon |
The Mixed Reality revolution is here, and it may change our world forever. The aim of this workshop is to use MR technology to create engaging and persuasive multimedia messages concerning the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Students will acquire knowledge about the current state of MR technology and prepare simple projects merging a view of real-world environment with computer generated multimedia content (typography, animations, video, 3D objects etc.). To achieve this goal, students will use different authoring tools for MR (ZapWorks/Unity/Vuforia). Final works can take the form of posters/instalations available via mobile applications (iOS/Android).

Workshop 4
Old Type – New Type: Type in Urban Space (After Effects) Anja Stöffler & Ralf Ott |
---|
An exploration of Dublin’s urban spaces according to letters, type and logo representations. The goal is documenting type with smartphones, photo- and/or video cameras. On the second day we will develop a design concept and create a short clip / loop of the material in After Effects or/and Premiere. In the evening, the clips should be projected into the outer space and brought back into the urban space.

Workshop 5
Variable Type Design Maciej Polczynski |
---|
Variable fonts are currently the most advanced technology concerning developing and designing typefaces. It serves as a perfect tool for designing a set of motion, vector characters connected to Unicode table (therefore possible to access with keyboard). The workshop aims to provide non-type-design students with knowledge on developing variable font basing on two masters, or referring to motion design, two keyframes.
